Brief History
The British Rail Class 43 diesel-hydraulic locomotives were built by the North British Locomotive Company (NBL) from 1960 to 1962. When the Western Region began to design its diesel fleet it looked to overseas railways for help and advice. Working in collaboration with Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway) and Krauss-Maffi, BR negotiated a liecence to scale down the ‘V200’ design and to allow British manufactures to construct the design. whereas the Swindon-built Class 42 locomotives had Maybach engines and Mekydo transsmisions, the Class 43 locomotives had M.A.N. engines with Voith Transmissions.

The Class 43s were Named after famous Royal Navey Warships and were used for express passenger duities. the NBL-built D800s were withdrawn before their class 42 sisters and none survived to preservation.
