Brief History
Motor Luggage Vans resulted from the need for additional luggage accommodation on the Boat Trains that served the Cross Channel ferries departing from various ports on the south coast. They were designed to be fully compatible with units that operated services on the stretch of the south Eastern network between London and the Kent ports, such as the 4CEP (later Class 411)

In addition to operating with other sets, the MLVs had an international battery supply of their own, enabling independent movement away from third rail systems, especially on dockside lines. They were also capable of hauling a light tail load.

By the early 1990s, changes in commercial ferry passenger practices finally led to the demise of the Boat Trains. However, rather than becoming redundant, many MLVs gained a second lease of life either on mail trains, or as departmental tractor vehicles on the electrified sections of the BR Southern region.

Withdrawals commenced in 1994, with the final unit being retired from service in 2004. Eight of the ten units originally built have survived into preservation.
