BR Standard Class 4MT Tank
Brief History
Introduced in 1951, The Class 4 2-6-4T was the most numerous of all BR Standard tank locomotives. One Hundred & fifty five were constructed over a six year period, with 130 built at Brighton works, the remainder at Derby and Doncaster Works.

This British Railways Standard Design owes its ancestry to similar locomotives developed for the LMS by Stanier and Fairburn between 1935 and 1948. Although classified as “mixed traffic”, these locomotives were more suited to their role as a passenger tank engin on suburban trains, although they could easily handle short distance freight workings. The first of the Class was withdrawn in 1962, but general scrappage of the class did not commence untill 1964 and some examples on BR (SR) lasted until the end of operational steam power in 1967. The last example was finally withdrawn from service in 1969 having spent its final years on steam heating duty.

Fifteen of the class survived into preservation and operate at various heritage railways within the UK.
